What Are Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks, also known as striae, are a very common skin concern—especially during pregnancy. Studies show that 70–90% of women develop stretch marks during their first pregnancy. While they are not harmful to health, many find them cosmetically bothersome.

Stretch marks occur when skin is stretched too quickly, causing the elastic fibers and collagen beneath the surface to tear. They often appear as pink or purplish streaks during pregnancy (usually after the sixth month) and later fade into white or silvery lines.

Most commonly, stretch marks appear on the abdomen, but they can also affect the hips, thighs, buttocks, and breasts.

What Causes Stretch Marks?

  1. The development of stretch marks is influenced by both biological and lifestyle factors:

  2. Hormonal changes – During pregnancy, high levels of glucocorticoids weaken collagen and elastin fibers, making the skin more prone to tearing.

  3. Baby growth – A larger baby, twins, or an overdue pregnancy can increase abdominal stretching, raising the risk of stretch marks.

  4. Rapid weight gain – The faster the skin stretches, the more likely marks will form.

  5. Lifestyle – A sedentary lifestyle or lack of skincare may reduce skin elasticity, increasing susceptibility.

  6. Genetics – If your mother had stretch marks, you are more likely to develop them too.

Symptoms & Appearance

  2. Later stage: White or silvery lines that are permanent, but may soften over time.

  3. Common sites: Abdomen, thighs, hips, buttocks, and breasts.

  4. First pregnancies often produce more pronounced marks.

Who Is More Likely to Get Stretch Marks?

Research shows stretch marks are more common in:

2. Overweight person with rapid weight gain

3. Women with a family history of stretch marks

4. Individuals with lower natural collagen levels, which slows skin repair

Effective Stretch Mark Removal Treatments in Toronto

At Serene Cosmetic Clinic, we know that no two stretch marks are the same. Their color, depth, age, and the skin around them all respond differently to treatment. That’s why we never rely on a “one-size-fits-all” approach.

Instead, our medical team carefully evaluates:

  • The type and stage of your stretch marks (red, purple, or white)

  • The area and extent (abdomen, thighs, hips, or buttocks)

  • Your skin type, tone, and overall elasticity

  • Lifestyle, health factors, and treatment goals

From there, we design a customized combination plan, which may include:

  • Fractional Laser Resurfacing to remodel collagen

  • RF Microneedling (with or without PRP) for tightening and scar repair

  • Stretch Mark Removal Injections to stimulate regeneration from within

The result is a tailored treatment plan that maximizes effectiveness while minimizing downtime—designed just for you.

1. Fractional Laser Resurfacing

How Fractional Laser Resurfacing Treats Stretch Mark?

Fractional lasers deliver thousands of microscopic beams of energy into the skin. These beams create controlled micro-injuries in both the epidermis (outer layer) and the dermis (deeper layer). While leaving surrounding tissue intact, this process:

  • Stimulates new collagen and elastin production

  • Encourages skin cell turnover

  • Remodels damaged connective tissue where stretch marks have formed

Why It Helps Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks form when collagen and elastin fibers tear due to rapid skin stretching. This leaves behind streak-like scars that appear red, purple, or white depending on age. Fractional laser resurfacing targets this damaged tissue and helps the skin rebuild itself. Over time:

  • Red or purple marks (newer stretch marks) fade in color

  • White or silver marks (older stretch marks) become smoother and less noticeable

  • Surrounding skin looks tighter, firmer, and more even

Duration: 45 mins - 60 mins

Who is it for

✅ Suitable Candidates

  • Women after pregnancy – to minimize abdominal stretch marks (striae gravidarum)

  • Individuals with weight-related stretch marks – from rapid weight gain or loss

  • People with old, white stretch marks – which are harder to treat with topical creams alone

  • People with newer, red/purple stretch marks – lasers help fade discoloration faster

  • Clients with uneven skin texture or skin laxity around the abdomen, thighs, hips, or buttocks

⚠️ Not Ideal For

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women

  • People with active skin infections or open wounds in the treatment area

  • Those with certain medical conditions that impair healing (e.g., uncontrolled diabetes)

  • People with unrealistic expectations (fractional laser improves but does not completely erase stretch marks)

2. RF Micro-needling

How RF Microneedling Treats Stretch Marks:

  • Fine microneedles create controlled micro-channels in the skin.

  • At the same time, radiofrequency energy is delivered into the deeper dermis.

  • This dual action stimulates the body’s healing response by:

    • Boosting collagen and elastin production

    • Remodeling scar tissue from stretch marks

    • Tightening skin from the inside out

Why RF Microneedling Helps Stretch Marks

Stretch marks form when collagen and elastin fibers tear due to rapid stretching. RF Microneedling targets both the surface and deeper layers:

  • Newer stretch marks (red/purple): Fades discoloration by promoting skin renewal

  • Older stretch marks (white/silver): Smooths and softens texture for a more even appearance

  • Surrounding skin: Becomes firmer and more elastic, reducing the contrast between stretch marks and normal skin

Duration: 45 mins - 60 mins

Who is it for:

  • Women after pregnancy – reduce stretch marks, tighten skin around the tummy

  • Individuals with weight-related stretch marks – from rapid weight gain or loss
