Sculptra

Sculptra stimulates the body's natural production of collagen. Sculptra is commonly used to restore facial volume and improve the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Unlike other dermal fillers, Sculptra works gradually over several months to produce long-lasting results. On average, Sculptra results can last up to two years.

What Is Sculptra?

Sculptra is a type of dermal filler used for cosmetic purposes. It is made of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a synthetic material that stimulates collagen production in the skin. Sculptra is injected into the skin to restore volume and improve the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Unlike other dermal fillers, Sculptra works gradually over several months as the body's own collagen production is stimulated, resulting in a more natural and longer-lasting result. Sculptra is commonly used for facial rejuvenation, including restoring volume to the cheeks, temples, and chin. It was approved by the FDA and Health Canada.

Dermal Fillers vs. Sculptra

Sculptra is a type of dermal filler, but it differs from other dermal fillers in several ways.

  1. Sculptra is made of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), while many other dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid. PLLA is a synthetic material that stimulates collagen production in the skin, resulting in increased volume and a more youthful appearance over time.

  2. Sculptra is designed to work gradually over several months, as the body's own collagen production is stimulated. Other dermal fillers, such as hyaluronic acid fillers, typically work immediately and provide instant results that may last several months.

  3. Sculptra is often used for more extensive facial rejuvenation, such as restoring volume to the cheeks, temples, and chin. Other dermal fillers may be more appropriate for fine lines and wrinkles or for adding subtle volume to specific areas of the face.

What can Sculptra help?

Restoring volume to the cheeks, temples, and chin
• Improving the appearance of deep wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds (smile lines)
• Reducing the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles
• Enhancing facial contours and definition
• Improving the appearance of acne scars
• Providing an overall more youthful and refreshed appearance

How can I decide if Sculptra is the right treatment for me?

If you are concerned about sunken cheeks, temples, or chin, or deep wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds (smile lines), Sculptra may be a good option.

Sculptra works gradually over several months, as the body's own collagen production is stimulated. If you are looking for an immediate result, other dermal fillers, such as hyaluronic acid fillers, maybe a better option.

Sculptra is not recommended for individuals with an active skin infection or inflammation in the treatment area, a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring, or certain medical conditions. It's important to discuss your medical history with a qualified healthcare provider to determine if Sculptra is safe for you.

Sculptra typically requires multiple treatment sessions, spaced several weeks apart, to achieve optimal results. If you are not willing to commit to this treatment schedule, other options may be better suited to your needs.

Ultimately, the best way to determine if Sculptra is the right treatment for you is to schedule a consultation with a qualified healthcare provider who can assess your individual needs and goals and recommend the best course of treatment.

What happens during a treatment?

  • Consultation: Before your treatment, you will have a consultation with a nurse. She will evaluate your skin and discuss your medical history to ensure that Sculptra is a safe and appropriate treatment for you.

  • Pre-treatment preparation: The treatment area will be cleaned and numbed with a topical anesthetic cream. The healthcare provider may also mark the injection sites on your skin.

  • Injection: Sculptra is injected into the deep layers of the skin using a fine-gauge needle. The healthcare provider will use a technique called "serial puncture" to ensure even distribution of the product. Depending on the extent of the treatment area, several injections may be required.

What to Expect After Treatment?

1. Cold Pack
A cold pack or an ice pack will help reduce any common swelling. Within the first 24 hours of treatment, apply a cloth-wrapped cold pack to the treated area for a few minutes at a time. Never apply ice directly to the skin.

2. Facial Massage
Massage the treated area for five minutes five times a day for five days after treatment.

3. Avoid Sunlight
After treatment, excessive sunlight and UV lamp exposure should be avoided until any initial swelling and redness go away. Your doctor will provide guidelines on sunscreen protection and how to avoid excessive sunlight.

  • Post-treatment care: After your treatment, you may experience mild swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection sites. These side effects typically subside within a few days. You will be instructed to massage the treatment area several times a day for several days to ensure the even distribution of the product and to minimize the risk of lumps or nodules forming.

  • Follow-up treatments: Sculptra typically requires multiple treatment sessions, spaced several weeks apart, to achieve optimal results. The exact number of treatments you will need will depend on your individual needs and goals.

It's important to follow all post-treatment instructions provided by your healthcare provider to ensure the best possible results and minimize the risk of complications.

When will I notice my results and how long will they last?

The results of Sculptra are not immediate. Sculptra works by stimulating the production of collagen in the skin, which takes time. You will likely see gradual improvement over the course of several weeks to several months after the treatment. The duration of the results of Sculptra can vary depending on several factors, including the amount of product used, the number of treatments received, and your individual response to the treatment. On average, Sculptra results can last up to two years.

What are the most common side effects of Sculptra?

After your treatment, you may experience mild swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection sites. These side effects typically subside within a few days. You will be instructed to massage the treatment area several times a day for several days to ensure the even distribution of the product and to minimize the risk of lumps or nodules forming.

Is there any reason I cannot undergo treatment?
The Nurse Injector will go over all the reasons why you cannot have a Sculptra treatment done. Some examples include being pregnant, breastfeeding, allergies, infections and nerve disorders. It is very important to share every detail about your health history, allergies and medications with your Nurse Injector.
